Forklift Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries utilized to power electric forklifts should be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety measures must always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for employees working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG comprise goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area must be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the station should not be blocked and an injured employee must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a battery and charging area, open flames are prohibited. Never permit items such as lighters or matches to be utilized when an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging method can release gas. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
