Used Boom Lift BC - One of the commonest types of industrial equipment and aerial equipment is the boom lift. Commonly known as aerial work platforms, mobile elevating work platforms, cherry pickers, aerial devices and elevating work platforms, it was engineered to complete work at higher locations more efficient and easier. Warehouses, companies, contractors and retail operations and more rely on boom lifts on a daily basis. Keeping workers safe as they access conditions in a higher altitude is priceless. There are numerous models of boom lifts available in the industry. Most boom lifts can be successfully run with a single operator. This machine is popular for harvesting fruit in locations such as orchards that historically relied on climbing dangerous ladders. Ladders need to be secured on solid, even ground in order to be safely accessible, making them hard to rely on in a natural orchard setting. Boom lifts make it much easier to reach high tree tops for collecting fruit. Gaining Access Over Obstacles Boom lifts make working over top of obstacle much easier as many models have been engineered to travel up and over items. Boom lifts can reach items even when it is impossible to move the machine right underneath the area you are working in, making it possible to fix overhead cables within telephone line and pole installation, window cleaning applications and similar circumstances. Articulated boom lifts are comprised of many joints that allow the machine to bend under or over obstacles. These sections can independently move to allow workers to gain access to a variety of places. Famous for their tight turning radius, articulated booms offer an ideal solution for narrow hallways and storage facilities. There are dual-fuel models that can work inside and outside; diesel is best utilized outside while interior locations rely on electric models. Articulating Boom Lifts Popular for maintenance jobs and construction, articulating boom lifts are a useful piece of material handling equipment. Articulated boom lifts are utilized commonly for working on overhead power lines and wires. Firefighters may use these machines and some articulated boom lifts have water cannons. Maximum reach can be attained with telescoping boom sections on certain models. There are articulating boom lifts complete with an additional jib that allows the platform to extend an extra 6 feet in any direction. The nickname “spiders” has been given to these boom lifts due to their legs which can support the machine on rough or steep terrain. Capable of fitting through doorways, interior articulating boom lifts are more compact and used commonly in storage, retail and warehousing applications. Electric boom lifts are common for interior jobs due to their quieter options and lack of unhealthy carbon monoxide exhaust. Telescopic Boom Lifts Telescopic boom lifts do not bend the way articulating boom lifts do. These units use hydraulics to retract and extend outwards and upwards. The operator who is situated in the platform has the controls to operate and extend the lift on their own. Some taller and larger models have a jib situated near the top that is similar to an articulating boom lift model. Boom lifts are available that reach higher than one-hundred and eighty feet. In less than a minute, some models can reach their full extended height since these machines are so stable and reliable. Adjustable speed, along with varying weight range capacities from 500 to 1000 lbs. are available in dual-fuel and diesel options. Available in 4WD and the ability to fit through small spaces. Telescopic booms are common in a variety of settings due to their ability to combine height and reach. Jib The jib is the extension found at the end of the main boom and between the platform. Certain models offer an additional articulation point or hinge that allows the platform to travel horizontally and vertically. Jibs are available on telescoping boom lifts and articulating boom lifts. There is an articulation point available on certain models situated halfway between the platform and the wheels to allow the machine to reach over an obstacle and be lowered again if needed. Genie Articulating Boom Lifts A popular type of articulating boom lift manufactured on the market is the Genie Z-boom Model. Designed to provide the most versatility in difficult to access spaces, this model has the capacity to lift up, over and out with superior positioning. The first articulating Genie Z-30/20 boom was launched in 1985. These machines became immediately popular with their up-and-over design that continues to make them sought after nowadays. Proper Safety Measures When operating any type of industrial equipment, safety is first and foremost. It is essential that all potential safety hazards are known to anyone working within the area to maintain a safe atmosphere. Operating the equipment safely is vital for the operator and everyone in the vicinity. Before starting the boom lift, it is paramount that the proper safety gear and communication is in place. Ensure there are no flammable or combustible items, open flame or lit cigarettes near the machine, engine fuels or battery gases. For the ultimate safety, it is important to have a visible, safely mounted and accessible fire extinguisher within the operators reach. Maintaining a clear area around charging stations and work surfaces is important as tools or clutter could damage the boom lift or cause tire punctures etc. Daily Maintenance Daily maintenance includes a visual inspection and consulting the maintenance manual to ensure the machine is up to date and will operate safely. Lifting and supportive devices need to stabilize the weight on hand. Fasteners, straps and chains must be regularly checked to make sure they are safe working order. It is very dangerous to reuse single use fasteners and other components as they might fail if used beyond their recommendations. Discarded solvents and oils must be disposed of safely and in an approved container to prevent environmental contamination. Workbenches and workshop or garage areas need to have adequate lighting and ventilation. Maintenance is broad and typically categorized into subsections including Quarterly Maintenance, Annual Maintenance, Commissioning and Programmed Maintenance Intervals. Maintenance Inspection Report Main aspects of the boom lift are categorized and divided to facilitate the inspection process. Popular categories include Engine, Drive Chassis, Platform, Booms, Turntable, Controls and Function. Improperly conducting maintenance can lead to unsafe working conditions, damaged components, reduced performance and ultimately downtime. The maintenance inspection report extend the performance and service life of the machine and needs to be accurately maintained to ensure the machine is safe to run and that the machine is capable of performing properly. Commissioning refers to a list of one-time maintenance procedures to be complete at 50 hours and at 150 hour intervals. Quarterly and annual maintenance is required to be performed throughout the year. There are a variety of programmed maintenance procedures based on preparing the machine for pre-delivery machine operating. Consult your maintenance manual prior to operating to ensure all oil changes, battery life and fluid levels are primed for success. Boomlift / Manlift PDF
